About

"Documenting The Past, Engaging The Present"

As part of a proposed Korean Studies Research Institute at Vanguard University, Vanguard Doc Fest is a forward-looking interdisciplinary initiative that combines academic mentorship, professional development, and global cultural engagement. Led by professors in collaboration with industry professionals and community organizations, the program redefines practical learning through documentary filmmaking and cultural storytelling.

The program encourages students to collaborate and explore diverse cultures, history, government, politics, public policy, civic engagement, and contemporary issues through research, interviews, writing, and documentary production. Guided by faculty and professional filmmakers, students gain hands-on experience in storytelling, cinematography, editing, and public presentation while helping create dialogue about social, cultural, historical, civic, and policy issues.

As a sister festival to Jackson Doc Fest, Vanguard Doc Fest also showcases diverse, award-winning documentary films from around the world throughout the year while highlighting original Korean Studies documentaries produced by Vanguard University students.

The initiative culminates in an annual red-carpet documentary showcase featuring student productions alongside selected international documentaries, bridging education, filmmaking, and community engagement. In short, it is not just a film festival—it is a learning model, creative platform, and community event that brings history, civic engagement, and public dialogue to life through documentary filmmaking.

Mission:

At its core, Vanguard Doc Fest is designed to redefine how history is taught.

Instead of relying only on textbooks and lectures, students:

- Research real historical topics (such as the Korean War or cultural subjects like Budae Jjigae)
- Write essays exploring their curiosity and perspective
- Produce documentary films using records, interviews, and oral histories

These films are then premiered in a red carpet festival setting, turning the classroom into a professional, cinematic experience.

Purpose:

The purpose goes beyond filmmaking. Vanguard Doc Fest aims to

- Preserve history through storytelling and real voices
- Encourage critical thinking and discovery (“Did you know?” insights)
- Connect students, community, and professionals
- Create dialogue about social, cultural, and historical issues

In short, it’s not just a festival—it’s a learning model, creative platform, and community event that brings history to life through documentary filmmaking.

Why We Learn History?
